چکیده

A two-dimensional form of cross-covariance function between the radar radialand tangential-components (with respect to the direction of radar beam) of background wind errors is derived. Like the previously derived auto-covariance function for the radial-component, this cross-covariance function is homogeneous but non-isotropic in the horizontal. The autoand cross-covariance functions are used with the statistical interpolation technique to perform a vector wind analysis from Doppler radial-velocity observations on a conical surface of lowelevation radar scans. The structures of the two covariance functions are compared and interpreted in terms of the influence of a single-point radial-velocity observation on the analyzed vector wind field. The utility and value of these covariance functions are demonstrated through analysis experiments that use either simulated radial-velocity data from idealized flows or real radar observations. The results of the statistical interpolation scheme utilizing the proposed covariance functions are shown to be superior to the results of traditional VAD technique. The proposed technique can actually be considered a generalization of the traditional VAD technique.

Processing of Doppler radar radial winds for data assimilation

Atmospheric wind field is 3-dimensional and variable over time and space. Doppler radar measures one component of the wind vector, ie. the radar radial component. For complete description of the wind field simultaneous measurements should be made with three Doppler radars. Usually only one radar is available and the availability of the other two radars is compencated by simplifying assumptions ...

Variational Analysis of Over-sampled Dual-Doppler Radial Velocity Data and Application to the Analysis of Tornado Circulations

For the detection of severe weather phenomena such as tornados, mesocyclones, and strong wind shear, the azimuthal resolution of radial velocity measurements is more important. The typical azimuthal resolutions of 1° for the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radars and of 2° for the planned Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of Atmosphere (CASA) radars are not sufficient ...

Impact of assimilating airborne Doppler radar velocity data using the ARPS 3DVAR on the analysis and prediction of Hurricane Ike (2008)

[1] The ARPS 3DVAR data assimilation system is enhanced and used for the first time to assimilate airborne Doppler radar wind observations. It is applied to Hurricane Ike (2008), where radar observations taken along four flight legs through the hurricane vortex 14 to 18 h before it made landfall are assimilated. An optimal horizontal de-correlation scale for the background error is determined t...

The difference between Doppler velocity and real wind velocity in single scattering from refractive index fluctuations

Scattering of electromagnetic waves by turbulence is considered. It is shown that Doppler velocity (the ratio of Doppler shift and Bragg wave number) includes two terms: The first is the mean radial velocity in the scattering volume, and the second is what we call the “correlation velocity,” caused by a correlation between the fluctuations of velocity and those of refractive index. The correlat...
